How to Make a Butterfly from a Waste CD
Those old AOL CDs from the 90s are finally good for something! Their iridescent, reflective surface makes perfect butterfly wings. I made a mobile for my niece’s room with a swarm of these, and they cast beautiful rainbows everywhere.
You’ll need: 1 old CD, permanent markers or acrylic paint, a pipe cleaner, beads, and strong glue.
Let’s get crafting:
Create the Wings: Carefully snap the CD in half. Now, snap each half again. You now have four semi-circles—two for each butterfly!
Decorate: Use permanent markers or paint to add patterns to the shiny side of the CD pieces. Dots, lines, and swirls work great.
Assemble: Take a pipe cleaner and fold it in half. String a bead onto it to form the head and body. Fan two CD wing pieces out on each side and glue them securely to the pipe cleaner body.
Shape the Antennae: Twist the ends of the pipe cleaner to form the antennae.
You can glue a magnet to the back or hang it with thread. It’s a beautiful, sparkly way to upcycle a forgotten relic of the past.
