How to Make a Woolen Ladies’ Handbag
A hand-knitted or crocheted wool bag is my winter staple—it’s cozy, unique, and surprisingly durable. I made one with chunky wool a few years ago, and it’s still my go-to for a casual, textured look.

The simplest method is to knit or crochet two rectangles and sew them together.

Here’s the easy process:

Choose Your Wool: For a sturdy bag, use a chunky or super chunky wool yarn. This works up quickly and gives the bag enough structure to hold its shape.

Knit/Crochet the Panels: Make two identical panels in your chosen stitch. A simple garter stitch (knitting) or single crochet is perfect for a dense fabric. Make them as large as you want your bag to be.

Felt It (Optional): For incredible durability, you can felt your knitted panels. This involves agitating them in a washing machine with hot water, which causes the wool fibers to shrink and mat together into a thick, felted fabric that won’t unravel.

Assemble: Sew the two panels together along the bottom and sides. For straps, you can braid thick strands of yarn or continue knitting/crocheting two long strips. Sew them on securely.

Line it with a fun fabric to prevent small items from poking through the stitches, and you have a beautiful, handmade accessory.
