Different Types of Patiala Salwar Suits: Cutting & Stitching

The iconic Patiala salwar is known for its voluminous, comfortable fit and numerous pleats. But did you know there are variations? The cutting technique is what defines them.

The Classic Patiala: This involves using a very wide fabric (often twice the hip measurement or more). The magic happens when you create dozens of deep pleats at the top, which are stitched into a wide waistband. The excess fabric is then stitched together along the inseam, creating that signature, flowy volume from waist to ankle.

The Palazzo-style Patiala: A modern take! Here, the pleating starts at the hips rather than the waist, flowing out into wide legs that resemble palazzo pants. It’s less voluminous on top and offers a more contemporary silhouette.

The Parallel Patiala: My personal favorite for a streamlined look. The salwar is cut with a straighter leg, so the pleats provide texture and detail without overwhelming volume. It’s perfect for heavier fabrics like silks.

The key to stitching any type is a strong, durable waistband to support the weight of all those pleats!

A Patiala salwar (also called a pattian walee salwar) (also pronounced as Shalwar in Urdu) is a type of female trousers which has its roots in Patiala City in the Northern region of Punjab state in India. The King of Patiala in earlier times had its Royal dress as Patiala Salwar.
