How to Make a Floor Mat by Recycling Old Pants
Denim jeans are famously durable, making them the perfect material for a heavy-duty floor mat that can handle messy entryways. I made a patchwork one from my kids’ old jeans, and it’s indestructible!
The No-Sew (or Low-Sew) Approach:
The Patchwork Mat: Cut the legs of old pants into large squares or rectangles. Arrange them in a pattern you like. You can either sew them together using a simple running stitch or, for a truly no-sew project, use fusible bonding web. Iron the web between the fabric pieces to fuse them together into one large sheet. Finish the edges with a blanket stitch or more bonding tape.
The Rag Rug Method: Follow the cloth rug tutorial above, but use denim or other pant material for the strips. A denim braided rug is incredibly sturdy and perfect for a high-traffic area.
This is a fantastic way to give tough fabric a second life and create a mat that’s both functional and eco-chic.
