How to Make a Gown Kurti: Cutting and Stitching
The gown kurti—a longer, flowy tunic often with a side slit—is effortlessly elegant. The best part? It’s often just two rectangles for the front and back! I find this to be the easiest garment for beginners to sew.

The Simplest A-Line Gown Kurti:

The Cut: Fold your fabric in half. Your body measurement is key: the length from your shoulder to your desired hemline, plus 2 inches for hem and seams. The width at the bottom should be 1.5 times your hip measurement for good flow. Draw a gentle A-line shape from the shoulders down to the hem on the folded fabric and cut.

Neckline & Slits: Cut a simple round or V-neck on the top fold (this will be your front and back). On both sides, leave the last 6-8 inches at the bottom open to create side slits.

Stitching: Stitch the shoulder seams. Then, stitch down the sides from the armhole to the top of the slit. Hem the neckline, armholes, and the entire bottom edge, including the slits.

Add a belt to cinch the waist, and you have a stylish, comfortable gown kurti that you made yourself!
