This is one of my all-time favorite upcycling projects! A pair of old denim or corduroy pants has more than enough fabric for a cool, boxy jacket.

Let’s get started:

Deconstruct: Carefully rip open the inner leg seams and the crotch seam of your pants. You now have large, flat pieces of fabric. Press them flat.

Find a Pattern: Use a simple, boxy jacket or vest pattern you already have. Alternatively, you can use a well-fitting jacket from your closet as a template (lay it on the fabric and trace around it, adding seam allowance!). Position the pattern pieces to avoid worn-out areas like the knees.

Cut & Stitch: Cut out your front, back, sleeve, and collar pieces. A great hack is to use the original waistband as the finished bottom hem of your jacket—it saves time and looks awesome!

Embrace the Details: This is where the character comes in. Keep the original pockets! Incorporate the side seam of the pants as a design feature on the sleeve or back. The wear marks tell a story.
