How to Reuse Your Old Clothes to make rugs, carpet, table mat…a floor covering of thick woven material or animal skin, typically not extending over the entire floor.
Before you bag up those old t-shirts and jeans for donation, consider this: they can have a second life as a cozy, colorful, and completely custom rug! This is the ultimate satisfying, eco-friendly craft.
The Easiest Method: The Braided T-Shirt Rug
You’ll need: A pile of old cotton clothes (t-shirts are ideal), sharp scissors, a strong needle, and heavy thread or upholstery yarn.
Make Your “Yarn”: Lay a t-shirt flat and cut off the bottom hem and the seams under the arms. Now, cut 1-1.5 inch horizontal strips from the bottom up, stopping just before the armpits. You’ll get a bunch of loops. The pro trick: Instead of cutting each loop open, gently stretch it. The knit fabric will curl in on itself, creating a perfect, seamless yarn tube!
Start Braiding: Take three strips and knot them together at one end. Braid them tightly, and as you near the end of a strip, simply overlap a new one by a few inches and keep braiding—the stretch will hold it together.
Coil & Stitch: Begin coiling your long braid tightly. Hand-stitch through the inner edge of the braid into the previous round to sew the coils together. Continue coiling and stitching until you reach your desired size.
Finish: When you’re done, tuck the end of the final braid under and stitch it down securely.
It’s durable, washable, and every rug tells a story. According to the Upcycle Society, giving textiles a second life reduces landfill waste significantly, making your craft project a small act for the planet.
