There are many ways to repurpose used bottles, some of which require cutting the glass itself. Here’s how to do it.
The trick to cutting glass is scoring it and then applying extreme thermal shock. I’ve found that using a perfume or alcohol spray bottle gives you a fine, controlled mist that works perfectly.
The Process:
Score It: Wrap a piece of yarn around the bottle where you want the cut. Use this as a guide to score a deep, even line around the glass with a glass cutter.
Burn It: Soak the yarn in acetone or nail polish remover, slip it back onto the scored line, and light it on fire. Wear gloves! Rotate the bottle slowly for an even burn.
Shock It: Just as the flame is about to go out, quickly spray the scored line with a fine mist of cold water from your perfume spray bottle.
Tap It: You should hear a “ping” and see the crack propagate. Gently tap the bottle if needed, and it should cleanly break along the scored line. Sand the sharp edges with coarse sandpaper.
