Hand Embroidery: Brazilian Neck Design with Mirror Work
Forget flat, traditional embroidery—Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery (BDE) is here to make your necklines pop! I recently used this technique on a client’s plain kurta, and the 3D effect was absolutely jaw-dropping. It’s all about creating lush, realistic flowers and textures that you can practically feel.
So, what makes it special? BDE uses special rayon threads that have a gorgeous sheen and are specifically designed to hold loops and knots. Combined with the sparkle of mirror work (shisha), it’s a match made in textile heaven.
Here’s how to approach it for a neck design:
The Foundation: Start by tracing your chosen neckline pattern onto the fabric. Sketch where you want your main floral elements (like roses or leaves) and mark spots for the mirrors.
The Stitches: This is where the magic happens. Use bullion knots for rose petals, cast-on stitch for feathery leaves, and stem stitch for outlines. The goal is depth and texture.
Adding the Mirrors: Secure your mirrors using the traditional continuous stitch or the lazy daisy method for a more floral integration. Don’t just place them randomly; make them look like dewdrops in the center of flowers or berries on a vine.
It does require patience, but the result is a handcrafted masterpiece that’s totally on-trend with the move towards bold, artisanal details.
