How to Make a Royal Style Key Holder with Cardboard
Who says organization has to be boring? I designed a royal key holder for my kitchen that looks like a piece of ornate wall art, and the best part? It was made from a leftover cardboard box! It adds a touch of glamour to my entryway and finally solved the “lost keys” problem.
You’ll need: Thick cardboard, gold/silver acrylic paint, a hot glue gun, old costume jewelry, beads, and small hooks.
Create Your Throne for Keys:
Cut the Base: Cut a shape from the cardboard. An ornate mirror shape, a shield, or a simple rectangle with scalloped edges cut out works perfectly.
Build the Texture: This is the royal secret! Cut other pieces of cardboard into shapes like swirls, leaves, or diamonds. Glue these layered pieces onto your base to create a 3D, bas-relief effect. This depth is what makes it look expensive.
Gild It: Paint the entire piece with a base coat of black or deep red. Once dry, dry-brush metallic gold or silver paint over the top. Focus on the high points of your design to make the details pop.
Add the Bling: Glue on pearls, rhinestones from old jewelry, or fancy buttons. Finally, screw in small brass hooks along the bottom edge.
It’s functional, fabulous, and a brilliant conversation starter.
