The best stitch for this is the Backstitch or Chain Stitch worked in a geometric pattern.
How to create the Jaali effect:
Draw the Grid: Lightly draw a grid of small squares or diamonds on your fabric with a water-soluble marker.
Stitch the Lines: Using a backstitch, carefully embroider over the lines of your grid. The goal is to create a series of connected open squares.
Add the “Roots”: Inside each square, add a small, simple motif like a dot (French knot), a tiny star, or a small cross. This “roots” the design and fills the space lightly.
Keep it Consistent: The magic of jaali is in its repetition. The uniform pattern across the fabric creates a beautiful, textured lattice effect that looks intricate but is achieved through simple, repetitive stitches.
It’s a meditative and stunning technique that elevates any plain fabric.
