DIY Hanging Flower Basket Using Newspapers
Why buy a hanging basket when you can weave your own from recycled newspapers? It’s stronger than you think and has a beautiful, rustic charm. I’ve grown trailing ivy in mine for months, and it’s held up perfectly outdoors!
You’ll need: Lots of newspapers, a knitting needle or skewer, and some white glue.
The Weaving Process:
Make the “Yarn”: Roll a sheet of newspaper diagonally around a skewer, gluing the end to secure. Remove the skewer, and you have a long, sturdy paper stick. Make about 30-40 of these.
Create the Base: Arrange 6-8 sticks in a star shape, crossing them in the center. Weave another stick in an over-under pattern around the center to hold them together, creating a flat, circular base.
Build the Sides: Gently bend the radiating sticks upward. Now, take your “yarn” and continue weaving in a spiral around the sides until you reach your desired height.
Finish & Seal: Fold the top ends over the last weave and glue them down. For weather resistance, give the entire basket two coats of outdoor-rated sealant or mod podge. Line it with a plastic bag, add soil, and your plants!
It’s an eco-friendly, satisfying project that brings your garden to life.
