Before you toss those worn-out jeans, consider this: they’re the perfect material for a sturdy, stylish summer tote. Denim is durable and gets softer with use, making it ideal for a beach bag or a casual market tote.
The Simple Tote Method:
Cut: Cut two large rectangles from the flattest parts of the jeans (the thighs work well) for the bag’s front and back. Cut two long strips for the handles.
Sew: Place the two rectangles right-sides together. Sew around the three sides (both sides and the bottom), leaving the top open.
Box the Corners (for depth): Pinch the bottom corner flat and sew a line across it about 1.5 inches from the point. Trim the excess. Repeat for the other corner. This creates a nice flat bottom.
Attach Handles: Turn the bag right-side out. Position, pin, and securely stitch your denim handles to the inside of the bag’s top opening. Double or triple stitch this part—it bears all the weight!
Get Creative: Use the original hem as the top of your bag for a finished look, or add pockets from the jeans for extra functionality!
