Simple & Latest Boat Neck Design
The boat neck (bateau) is a classic cut that’s effortlessly chic and surprisingly simple to stitch. It’s wide, running almost horizontally from shoulder to shoulder, offering a graceful glimpse of the collarbones.

Cutting & Stitching Tips:

The Pattern: The key is to widen the shoulder line. On your front and back bodice pieces, extend the neckline outwards towards the shoulder points. The curve is very slight and shallow.

The Finish: Because the neckline is wide, stabilisation is crucial. You must use a clear elastic tape or a stay tape along the inner seam when attaching your bias binding or facing. This prevents the neckline from stretching out of shape over time—a lesson I learned the hard way with my first project!

The Look: This design works beautifully with stiff fabrics like cotton poplin or with drapey ones like crepe. It’s a versatile, modern neckline that’s perfect for both casual and formal kurtas.
