Collar Neck Design: Cutting & Stitching
A well-executed collar can transform a garment from homemade to haute couture. The current trend leans towards exaggerated proportions and mixed materials.
My go-to tips for a flawless collar:
The Perfect Pattern: The secret is in the pattern pieces. Your upper collar should be slightly larger than your under collar to allow for a clean roll and no pulling. Always, and I mean always, interface the entire upper collar and the outer edge of the under collar for crispness.
The Critical Clipping: Before turning the collar right-side out, clip the curves and notch the corners. This step is non-negotiable if you want sharp points and smooth curves. Don’t skip it!
The Invisible Attach: To attach the collar to the neckline, pin it carefully right-sides together. Stitch slowly, following the seam line precisely. For a truly clean finish, understitch the facing to the seam allowance to prevent it from rolling outward.
Latest Design Twist: Try a contrast fabric on the underside of your collar that peeks out when it folds over. Or, make a detachable collar with button fastenings—it’s a hugely popular way to maximize your wardrobe’s versatility.
