Traditional gota patti work is beautiful but can be expensive and time-consuming. A fantastic, accessible hack I’ve used is fabric paint to create a stunning gota-like effect.
Gold-Painted Gota Patti Border Designer Saree

You’ll need: A plain saree, gold metallic fabric paint (I recommend Pebeo or Jaquard brands), a fine-tip nozzle or a brush, and stencils (optional).
Prep: Place a cardboard inside the saree under the border area to prevent bleed-through.
Design: For a uniform look, use adhesive stencils with traditional motifs (like paisleys or florals). For a freehand look, lightly sketch your design with a chalk pencil. I remember freehanding a border for a client; it had an beautiful, organic energy that machine-made work lacks.
Paint: Carefully fill in the design using the paint. The key is to apply it thickly enough to create a slight raised texture, mimicking real gota ribbon.
Dry & Set: Let it dry completely for 24 hours, then heat-set with an iron (on the reverse side) to make it washable.
