How to Braid Hair: DIY Hairstyles for Every Hair Type
Is there anything more universally flattering than a great braid? The myth is that braids are only for long, thick hair. I’m here to tell you that’s not true! The trick is adapting the technique to your hair type.
Fine Hair Tip: Braid your hair slightly dirty or use a texturizing spray. Tease the sections gently before braiding for instant volume. A fishtail braid often works better than a classic three-strand as it looks fuller.
Curly/Coily Hair Tip: Braid on damp hair with plenty of leave-in conditioner to define your natural pattern and reduce frizz. Your texture gives incredible grip and longevity to braids.
Short Hair Tip: Focus on accent braids! A small Dutch braid along the crown or a braided headband can add so much style without needing length.
Start Simple: The Dutch Braid
Section a piece of hair at the top of your head and split it into three.
Instead of crossing over, cross the strands under the middle piece.
As you continue, add more hair to each section before crossing it under.
This creates a beautiful, raised braid that sits on top of your head. Practice makes perfect
