The boat neck is a classic, elegant neckline that’s surprisingly simple to draft. It widens the shoulders and looks fantastic on its own or layered with a statement necklace.
Drafting the Neckline:
Use a Basic Kurti Block: If you have a basic front and back kurti pattern, you’re already halfway there.
Mark the New Line: On the front pattern piece, measure in from the shoulder seam about 2-3 inches. On the center front, the neckline should only be about ½ to 1 inch lower than the original. Draw a gentle, curved line connecting these two points. The back neckline can be drafted similarly or kept a little higher.
Cutting: Cut your fabric using this new pattern.
Finishing is Key: To finish the raw edge, I highly recommend using bias binding. You can buy it pre-made or make your own from a contrasting fabric for a pop of color.
Simply pin the binding to the right side of the neckline, sew it on, fold it over to the inside, and stitch in the ditch to secure. It gives a super clean, professional finish that maintains the neckline’s structure.
