Before you toss those old jeans, consider this: denim is one of the most durable fabrics for DIY home goods! A denim rug is not only eco-friendly but also adds a cool, rustic texture to any room. I made one for my balcony and it’s held up perfectly for two years.

The Easy No-Sew Method (Braided Rug):

Prep: Cut your old denim into long strips, about 1-1.5 inches wide. You can use different shades of blue for an ombre effect.

Braid: Take three strips and braid them together tightly. When you reach the end of a strip, simply overlap a new one and keep braiding. Continue until you have one very long, continuous braid.

Coil & Glue: Starting from the center, coil your braid tightly, hot-gluing the coils together as you go. This is the base of your mat.

Finish: Keep coiling and gluing until you reach your desired size. For a table mat, stop early. For a floor mat, keep going! The weight of the denim makes it lie flat and sturdy.

Door mat from old clothes, door mat making, easy floor mat from recycled clothes. Denim is one of the most durable fabrics made and also the easiest to find for projects such as this small space floor mat.

You can repurpose last year’s worn out jeans or go in search of a handful of jumpers or dresses at the thrift store without spending a lot of money. You can also purchase new denim fabric in various shades from most fabric stores if you aren’t interested in hitting up the thrifts.
