How to Make a Kalamkari Bangle – Step by Step
Love the ancient art of Kalamkari but want a wearable project? Decorating a bangle is the perfect way to start! I find the process of telling a story with a brush incredibly meditative.
You’ll need: A plain wooden or metal bangle, fine-tip fabric markers or acrylic paints, a sealant.
The Tutorial:
Prime the Canvas: If using a wooden bangle, sand it lightly and apply a base coat of white or off-white paint. Let it dry completely.
Sketch the Motif: Lightly pencil a classic Kalamkari element—a peacock feather, a lotus flower, or intricate paisley.
Ink It: Using fine-tip markers or a thin brush, trace over your pencil lines. Kalamkari is defined by its precise black outlines.
Add Color: Fill in your design with traditional earthy colors: rust red, indigo blue, mustard yellow, and green. Let the colors dry.
Seal It: Apply 2-3 thin coats of clear varnish or mod podge, letting each dry. This will protect your artwork and make the bangle durable.
You now have a beautiful piece of art to wear on your wrist!
Kalamkari is a type of cotton cloth printed by hand. In this video, I have demonstrated making of Fabric bangle using Kalamkari cloth.
