How to Make a Rug from Old Cloth
Got a pile of old clothes, bedsheets, or towels? Don’t throw them out! Braiding them into a cozy, rustic rug is my all-time favorite upcycling project. I made one for my bathroom, and it’s not only soft underfoot but also holds sentimental value. It’s surprisingly easy and requires no weaving skills.

You’ll need: Old fabric (cotton works best), scissors, a strong needle, and thick thread.

The Simple Braided Method:

Make Your “Yarn”: Cut your old cloth into long strips, about 1-2 inches wide. You can tear them for a rustic look. Join strips together by slitting holes and looping them through, creating one continuous long strip per color.

Braiding Time: Take three long strips of fabric and knot them together at one end. Braid them tightly until you have a very long, triple-thick braid.

Coil & Stitch: Start coiling your braid tightly around itself. As you coil, use a strong needle and thread to whipstitch the outer edge of the braid to the inner coil next to it. Hide your stitches underneath.

Keep coiling and stitching until you reach your desired size. You can make a round, oval, or even a heart-shaped rug. It’s durable, washable, and full of character!
