Kurta front neck design cutting and stitching

The neckline is the focal point of your kurta! A well-executed design can elevate a simple outfit into something special. In my experience, starting with a basic pattern is key. I always advise beginners to master the round neck and V-neck first, as they are the foundations for nearly every other style.

Here’s the basic process:

Draft Your Pattern: Use a well-fitting kurta as a template to draft your front and back pieces on paper. Mark your desired neckline shape clearly on the front pattern.

Cutting: Place your pattern on the folded fabric and carefully cut it out. Remember to add seam allowance (usually ½ inch) around the neckline.

Facing is Your Friend: Instead of binding, cut a strip of fabric to use as a facing. This will give you a clean, professional finish from the inside. Pin the facing to the right side of the neckline, stitch, clip the curves, turn it inside, and press.

Mastering this technique gives you the confidence to experiment with more complex shapes later.
