How to Make an African Tribal Mural on Canvas
African art is known for its powerful symbolism and bold geometry, not perfect realism. So, don’t worry about being a master painter! This is about expression. I remember creating one inspired by Ndebele designs, and its vibrant energy completely transformed my workspace.
Start with Inspiration: Look up traditional patterns from the Ndebele of South Africa, the Adinkra symbols of Ghana, or the Bamileke bead designs of Cameroon. Choose a color palette that speaks to you—earthy ochres, bold blacks, and vibrant reds are iconic.
Your Creative Process:
Background First: Paint your canvas with a solid background color and let it dry.
Outline is Key: Using a pencil, lightly draw the central geometric shapes. Think triangles, chevrons, and concentric lines. The power is in crisp, clear outlines.
Fill with Meaning: Use acrylic paints to fill in your shapes. For authenticity, many designs are outlined in black. Recent trend: Metallic acrylics (gold, copper) are a stunning contemporary twist on traditional patterns.
This isn’t just a art project; it’s a way to connect with a rich cultural history of storytelling through design.
Here I described how to make African tribal murals.Already I have taught how to make Buddha Mural.if you missed that kindly check that. Here I Take readymade Canvas which is available in online stores. Please check Amazon.in. or you can use plain plywood. I drew the African figures on a paper which is same size of the canvas. and then I traced on the canvas using carbon Paper. If you are not able to draw well, then no worries, Just Google it the pictures and Take a Print out and use it. Here I used Shilpkar clay. It’s a indian brand resin clay.It will dried up in 90 minutes. Also you can use airdryclay. you can use talc or water to give a smooth finish to the clay.Make designs using pen nib, Bobby pin tip or with any other objects. Once the clay dried up, start painting the background with acrylic Colors. I used yellow, orange, red and tinge of of black.Blend the Colors well on the meeting point. once the background is done, start painting the figures. Once dried, use synthetic Varnish to protect the Mural.I don’t know whether this step is necessary. But I always do this for the perfect, glossy and dust free finish.
