How to Make a Newspaper Lantern
Forget buying expensive decor; some of the most stunning pieces come from upcycling! I love making these newspaper lanterns—they cast the most beautiful, soft light and are a huge hit at my DIY parties. They’re surprisingly sturdy and eco-friendly.
You’ll need: Old newspapers, glue (white PVA works best), a balloon, and a brush.
Here’s the fun process:
The Base: Blow up a balloon to your desired lantern size. Tear newspapers into strips—irregular edges blend better than scissor-cut ones!
The Papier-Mâché: Mix glue with a little water to a creamy consistency. Dip each strip, remove the excess, and layer them onto the balloon, covering the entire bottom half. Overlap them randomly for strength.
Dry & Decorate: Let it dry completely overnight. Pop the balloon! Now, get creative. Cut geometric shapes out of the sides for light patterns, or add a second layer with comic strips for color. Seal it with a final layer of glue for a slight sheen.
Pro Tip: Place a battery-operated tea light inside. It’s safe, flickers like the real thing, and makes your handmade lantern absolutely magical.
