How to Make a Flower Vase with Newspaper

Don’t toss that stack of old newspapers! You can easily transform them into a chic, eco-friendly vase. I love this project because it’s surprisingly sturdy and a fantastic way to upcycle. I made a set of these for my balcony, and they’ve held up beautifully against the elements.

Let’s Get Rolling:

Make Paper “Sticks”: Tightly roll a sheet of newspaper diagonally around a skewer, gluing the end to secure. You’ll need about 30-40 of these “sticks.”

Weave the Base: Weave 8 sticks horizontally and 8 vertically in a tight check pattern to form a solid base. Glue the intersections.

Build the Sides: Bend the vertical sticks upward. Take a new paper stick and start weaving it horizontally around the base, circling around and gluing as you go.

Seal It: Once you reach your desired height, fold the top ends over and glue them down inside. For a waterproof interior, place a glass jar or plastic cup inside to hold water and real flowers.

It’s a satisfying project that turns yesterday’s news into today’s decor.

I’m a huge fan of upcycling, and making a vase from old newspaper is one of the most elegant projects. It’s surprisingly sturdy and has a beautiful, rustic texture. I made a set of these for my balcony table, and they’ve held up perfectly for months!

The secret technique? Rolling paper rods.

Make the Paper Straws: Take a full sheet of newspaper. Place a skewer or thin knitting needle at one corner. Roll the paper diagonally around the skewer tightly. Dab a bit of glue on the final corner to seal it. Carefully slide the skewer out. You’ll need about 20-30 of these “straws.”

Shape the Base: Flatten a few straws and weave them together in a simple mat to form the base of your vase. Glue them down securely.

Build the Walls: Now, start gluing your vertical straws around the edge of the base, standing them up. Once they’re secure, you can take a long paper straw and weave it horizontally around the vertical ones, gluing as you go, to build the walls up to your desired height.

Finish & Protect: Once you’re happy with the shape, trim any excess. Finally, and this is crucial, seal it with 2-3 coats of clear varnish or Mod Podge. This will make it waterproof and durable enough to hold a real glass or plastic water container inside.

The final product has a gorgeous, hand-woven look that’s totally unique and conversation-starting!

Here is a great looking flower vase made of magazine papers and package boxes. No buying required for making this flower vase. All we need is papers and a pieces of thick card boards. Once we are practiced with one or two vases. We can start trying different shapes of the same.
