How to Make an Outdoor Plant Pot
Standard planters can be so expensive! My favorite durable and lightweight solution is a hypertufa pot. Hypertufa is a mix of peat moss, perlite, and cement that mimics ancient stone troughs.

The rustic recipe:

1 part Portland cement

1.5 parts peat moss

1.5 parts perlite

Water (until it’s like cottage cheese)

The fun part:

Find a Mold: Use two plastic containers (one smaller, one larger) to create a mold. Coat the inside of the big one and the outside of the small one with cooking spray.

Layer & Set: Press the hypertufa mix into the bottom of the large mold, then place the smaller mold inside to create the hollow. Weight it down with rocks. Let it set for 24-48 hours.

Cure & Age: Remove it from the molds and let it cure for a few weeks, rinsing it occasionally to neutralize the pH. It will develop a beautiful, mossy patina over time.

It’s a perfect weekend project that results in a professional-looking, frost-proof pot for your garden.
