Hand Embroidery Design Of Twisted & Checker Stitch
Ready to move beyond the basic backstitch and satin stitch? Twisted and checker stitches are your gateway to creating complex-looking fillings and borders with surprisingly simple techniques. I often use these stitches to teach students how to add “wow” factor without advanced skills.
Twisted Stitch (aka Twisted Chain or Braided Stitch):
What it is: This stitch creates a beautiful, rope-like line that’s perfect for curved designs like vines, stems, or intricate borders. It’s more dimensional than a simple stem stitch.
How to use it: Don’t just use it for outlines! Try stitching several twisted lines parallel to each other to fill a wider area with gorgeous texture.
Checker Stitch (aka Checkerboard Filling):
What it is: As the name implies, this stitch creates a neat, woven, checkerboard pattern. It’s a fantastic geometric filling stitch for areas that need visual interest but not too much bulk.
How to use it: It looks amazing filling in geometric shapes on a modern embroidery piece, like the walls of a minimalist house or the petals of a stylized flower. Using two contrasting colors makes the checker effect really stand out.
Combining these two stitches in one design—using the twisted stitch for organic lines and the checker stitch for geometric fills—creates a stunning contrast that showcases your skills.
